A day of shopping and culture in Bussum

One could consider the Gooi area (as a part of the Gooi & Vecht region) as the Beverly Hills of The Netherlands. It's a popular and luxurious habitat for the rich and famous of our small country. The city of Bussum is considered to be the heart of the Gooi area, so there is no better place for a day of shopping and culture! Bussum is easy to reach by both car and public transport.

Culture

Start your visit by exploring one of the best kept secrets of Bussum. The fortress Fort Werk IV is located in the center of Bussum and was built as part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie (Dutch Waterline) between 1868 and 1870. As large parts of The Netherlands are below sealevel, the Dutch have been fighting water for as long as we can remember. However, early on the Dutch discovered how to use water as an advantage to protect The Netherlands from its enemies. The Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie was the nation's best line of defence. By causing intentional inundation the Dutch made water their ally in times of war.

Fort Werk IV is the only one out of five structures of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie that has been spared. It was built to protect the fortress Naarden against hostile armies and has never been used for military purposes. Fort Werk IV has been fully restored between 2007 and 2009.

Shopping

After visiting Fort Werk IV you can head back to the city centre for some shopping. The main shopping streets are the Spiegelstraat, Nassaustraat, Havenstraat and Kapelstraat. Here you won't find international chains like H&M or Zara, because Bussum is known for its many local boutiques and concept stores.

In the Nassaustraat and Kapelstraat you will find several nice options for lunch, drinks or dinner to break or conclude your shopping spree. If you are looking to dine somewhere fancy restaurant Soigné in the Kapelstraat is a great option. This is actually the smallest Michelin rated restaurant in The Netherlands!
