Architecture in the midst of nature in Hilversum

It's no secret that the lively city of Hilversum is scattered with beautiful, surprising architecture, by "starchitect" Dudok a.o.. But did you know there is also a lot to discover outside the city center? Put on your hiking shoes and explore magnificent estates, notable buildings and art in open air.

Monumental estate

Landgoed Zonnestraal (Sunbeam Estate) lies on the border between Hilversum and Loosdrecht, in the midst of some 120 ha of forest. Sanatorium Zonnestraal was established here in 1928 as a center to provide aftercare for tuberculosis patients. The beautiful white building covered in glass was designed by architect Jan Duiker. Back in the days the public believe was that tuberculosis would be gone within thirty years, so during the build sustainability wasn't a priority. Fortunately enough, later on the public noticed the monumental value of the Zonnestraal complex, thus in the nineties an extensive restoration program commenced.

Tours and taking a break

Landgoed Zonnestraal has a parking lot. The main building of the complex is located at Loosdrechtse Bos 15. At this location you will find Brasserie Zonnestraal, a great place to have lunch or just a coffee while visiting the estate. From here you can start a walk of 4.5 km through beautiful forests and a sculpture garden. There are guided tours on every last Sunday of the month between 12pm and 2pm. Afterwards you can settle at the Brasserie for a nice lunch (every day of the week) or dinner (on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays).

The medieval St. Anne path runs through the Loosdrechtse Bos and forms a nearly straight connection between Hilversum and Loosdrecht. In the past 100 years, the path was almost forgotten, but in 2011 it has been restored. If you follow this path towards Loosdrecht, you will pass estate shop De Rading. Here you can find indoor and outdoor plants, organic food and also lovely gift options. For hiking lovers the Loosdrecht Forest, the Hoorneboegse Heath and South Heath belt together seamlessly. A magnificent nature reserve for hiking, biking and relaxing! There are several routes spread out around these terrains. The small Hilversum airport can also be easily reached by foot.
