Shopping in Bussum

and also a little bit of culture!

Bussum is a must for every shopper, and every shopaholic can spend a nice afternoon here. Less well known is that Fort Werk IV, a fortress that is part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie (Dutch Waterline) is situated in the center of Bussum. Because large parts of the netherlands are below sealevel, the dutch have been fighting the water for as long as we can remember. However, water isn’t the only enemy of our country. In times of war water became a welcome ally and the nation’s best line of defence. The dutch caused intentional inundation using Hollands biggest secret weapon: the Dutch Waterline and the Fort Werk IV was a part of this line.

Plan your visit to Bussum by train or park your car in one of the two car parks and start your visit.

At the Abraham Kuijperstraat (next to theater Spant) lies Fort Werk IV, one of the five “works’’ that were built between 1868 and 1870 to protect the fortress Naarden against hostile armies. The fort Werk IV was never used for military purposes, but it is the only one of the five “works” that is spared. Between 2007 and 2009, it is fully restored. Fort Work IV is open from Monday to Saturday between 10.00 and 16.00. Admission is free, but you will be asked to report to the staff. You can make a tour, which also explains the viewpoints.

Back in the center of Bussum you can go shopping. The main shopping streets are the Spiegelstraat, Nassaustraat, Havenstraat and Kapelstraat. And do you fancy a delicious sandwich or a crispy pizza? Visit Alegria in Kapelstraat for lunch of dinner. Within you is very atmospheric "in the middle of the store," the small terrace at the front overlooking the shoppers. For (lunch) and dinner, there are several opportunities at any price. For example Brasserie Bel Ami, with a French-inspired cuisine. Opposite lies Izzi, where you can fine oriental food, the sushi is great! Very small and very cozy is a little pizzeria La Vespa on Stationsstraat, next to another great Italian Restaurant, Grand Selene.  And for a real ‘star dinner’ you can visit restaurant Soigné in Kapelstraat. This is the smallest Michelin rated restaurant in the Netherlands. Plenty of choice!

In Bussum there are several hotels and Bed&Breakfasts to spend the night. Centrally located in the area, it's a great town to explore the surroundings of the Gooi & Vecht area.
